Cephonodes hylas is very similar to Cephonodes picus but immediately distinguishable by the missing foretibial claw and the white or very light yellow tinge to the underside of the abdomen

The larvae have two major colour forms. The colour form is normally visable already from 1st instar and follows through to 5th instar.

Cephonodes hylas larvae are in most cases very similar to Cephonodes picus, but Cephonodes picus larvae skin surface more shiny.
